Givaudan Active Beauty builds cosmetic actives the way a biotech builds a drug candidate: identify the biological target, isolate or synthesise the molecule that hits it, then prove the effect in vitro and in vivo before the ingredient is named. The naming comes last, which is the opposite of how much of the actives market works.

ABOUT THIS PRINCIPAL
A biotech platform inside a fragrance house.
Active Beauty sits within Givaudan's Fragrance and Beauty division, which gives it access to research infrastructure most standalone actives companies cannot fund. The Pomacle site in France runs industrial biotechnology and fermentation for the hyaluronic acid and biotech-derived ranges. The Avignon centre specialises in green fractionation, extracting defined molecules from plant material without the solvent burden of conventional extraction.
The scientific signature of the range is the identification of unusual biological entry points. Neurophroline works on cortisol production in skin cells. Brightenyl and Synchronight are activated by the skin microbiota, which Givaudan describes as a distinct functional layer. Revivyl came out of a bioguided fractionation of a chlorophyll-free parasitic plant. These are not extract-and-hope ingredients.
The Active Beauty datasheets name biological targets and comparative potency. When a brand has to defend a claim to a regulator, that specificity is the difference between a submission and an argument.

The Avignon Centre of Excellence isolates defined active fractions from plant material through processes designed around solvent reduction. Synchronight, from gardenia fruit, came out of this platform.

Microbiota-activated molecules
A set of actives is delivered as a precursor that the skin's own microflora converts into the functional molecule. Brightenyl, Synchronight, and Revivyl all use variations of this bioconversion approach.
