Emmerthal, Lower Saxony, Germany · Founded 1886 · Fourth-generation, owner-managed
Mineral salts, engineered to specification rather than sold to a formula.
A mineral salt is not a commodity once the dosage form is difficult. Bulk density decides whether a capsule fills correctly. Particle size decides content uniformity. Wettability decides whether an effervescent works. Counter-ion choice decides bioavailability and taste. Dr. Paul Lohmann sells the specification, not just the compound.
The company has manufactured mineral salts in Germany since 1886 and now offers more than 400 products across over 7,000 specifications. It supplies the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, nutritional supplement, food and personal care industries from two German sites.
- Cosmetics & Personal Care
Over 400 mineral salts and more than 7,000 specifications. The specification count is the more meaningful number: it is the measure of how far a grade can be tailored.
ABOUT THIS PRINCIPAL
One chemistry, taken seriously for 140 years.
The company began in 1886 when chemist Dr. Paul Lohmann started reducing iron oxide to elemental iron in a disused factory in Hamelin. The operation moved to Kirchohsen, now part of Emmerthal, in the 1950s, and a second site was established at Lueneburg in 1972, focused principally on magnesium salts. Production has remained exclusively in Germany throughout.
In pharmaceutical use, mineral salts occupy two distinct positions. Some are active pharmaceutical ingredients in their own right, valued for pharmacological action: potassium, sodium and calcium phosphates in electrolyte correction, iron salts in anaemia, calcium salts in phosphate binding and supplementation. Others are excipients, valued for a technological function. Dr. Paul Lohmann supplies both, which means a single supplier qualification can cover both roles in a formulation.
The portfolio spans inorganic and organic chemistry: phosphates, citrates, sulfates, lactates, gluconates, bisglycinates, malates, glycerophosphates, ascorbates and fumarates, across magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, potassium and sodium, plus trace elements including copper, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, iodine and selenium. Iodine and selenium are also supplied as triturations for safe handling and precise dosing.
Products and quality levels are developed to the customer's requirement, including adaptation of bulk density, wettability, particle size, purity and pH. That is contract development wearing a catalogue's clothing.
ADCHEM distributes the Dr. Paul Lohmann mineral salt range with specification development support, working with the manufacturer to define the physical parameters your dosage form actually needs rather than defaulting to a standard grade.
FEATURED TECHNOLOGY
Where mineral salt selection actually gets decided.
Four variables account for most of the difference between a mineral salt that works in a dosage form and one that does not.
Counter-ion
Salt form selection
The same cation behaves very differently as a citrate, a bisglycinate, an oxide, or a sulfate: solubility, elemental content, tolerability, and taste all shift. The full range of salt forms across each mineral is what makes reformulation possible without changing supplier.
Physical form
Powder, granule and crystal engineering
Bulk density, particle size distribution, flow, and wettability are adapted to the process: direct compression, capsule filling, effervescent, sachet, or liquid. These parameters are specified, not incidental.
Purity
Pharmacopoeial and low-endotoxin grades
Grades are produced to the quality levels stipulated by pharmacopoeias or to customer specification, extending to salts for biopharmaceutical use where endotoxin control is a release criterion.
Dual Role
API and excipient from one source
Grades are produced to the quality levels stipulated by pharmacopoeias or to customer specification, extending to salts for biopharmaceutical use where endotoxin control is a release criterion.

APPLICATION AREAS
Where Dr. Paul Lohmann salts perform.
Oral solid dosage
Tablets, capsules and sachets where flow, compressibility and content uniformity depend directly on the physical specification of the salt.
PARTICLE ENGINEERING
DIRECT COMPRESSION
Effervescent and instant systems
Wettability and dissolution rate are specified rather than accepted, which is the difference between a clean effervescent and a cloudy one.

WORKING WITH ADCHEM
What ADCHEM adds to the Dr. Paul Lohmann relationship.
CUSTOM SPECIFICATION
Specification development, not catalogue picking
We work from your dosage form and process backwards to the physical specification the salt needs, then engage the manufacturer on a tailored grade where the standard one will not perform.
REFORMULATION SUPPORT
Salt form comparison
Reformulating for tolerability, taste, or elemental content usually means changing salt form rather than changing supplier. Our team runs that comparison with you.
AUDIT-READY
Supplier qualification support
Audit documentation, quality agreements, and change-control history assembled for your qualification file, so the approval process does not stall on paperwork.
AUTO-ATTACHED VIA COSMO
Full documentation with every sample
Specification, SDS, CoA, compendial statement, CEP reference where held, and applicable declarations dispatched with the sample as standard, via COSMO.
